Shaggy Sheep
and sun-bleached barn wood near Baker City barely hint at the
cool forests of the distant Wallowas
On State Route
203 east of Baker City, the 95 degree F, bone-dry heat made the
cold rushing waters of Eagle
Creek seem like
an impossibility, and the existence of dense, cool forests nearby
was even more unbelievable. Most travelers on I-84, the major
interstate through this area, see nothing of the Range as they
zoom along at 70 mph on their busy journeys between Portland,
Oregon; Boise, Idaho and Salt Lake City.
